Fall 2020 Course Withdraw Option Frequently Asked Questions

How does it work?

Students will receive letter grades for all fall 2020 courses. After final grades are posted on December 17, students will have two choices:

  1. Keep the letter grade in their courses. No action needed by student.
  2. Withdraw from the course. Grade assigned will be changed to a W (withdraw) or WC (withdraw-Covid).

Beginning December 17, 2020 (date final grades are posted to My UAFS), student will complete the online Withdrawal Request form.

What is the difference between a W and a WC?

The Department of Education has tightened the requirements for the calculation of satisfactory academic progress (SAP) when the withdrawal is due to COVID-19. If the reason for a change of grade request due to Covid 19, the student must provide written attestation explaining how the change to withdrawal is the result of Covid 19.

Allowable circumstances for the attestation include, but are not limited to:

  • Illness of the student or family member;
  • Need to become a caregiver or first responder;
  • Loss of childcare;
  • Economic hardship;
  • Inability to access wi-fi due to closed facilities; or
  • An increase in work hours as a result of the Covid-19 emergency.

Note: Decisions regarding changes to method of instruction (e.g. change from in-class instruction to online instruction) for the fall 2020 semester were made prior to the start of the semester, therefore, the Department of Education does not consider changes to course instruction as a Covid 19 emergency.

The withdrawal form will ask students to check if the withdrawal is due to Covid 19. If yes, students will need to provide their written attestation on the form.

Students who provide a valid attestation that meets the Department of Education criteria noted above will be given a WC (withdrawal-Covid) for the course(s); students whose attestation does not meet the standard or who mark no will be given a W (withdrawal) for the course(s).

Do I get to choose which courses change to a withdrawal?

Yes, you can request to change a letter grade to a withdrawal on a course-by-course basis.

How can I request to change a course grade to a withdrawal?

The Withdrawal Request form will be available on My UAFS on December 17, 2020, after final grades have posted. Students will use their UAFS credentials to access the form.
