Why Did You Choose to Attend UAFS?

I chose to attend UAFS for three main reasons with the first reason being the great scholarship opportunities.  My second reason is the size of the University because it is so easy to know people and be involved.  Finally, I chose this University because they have a great program with a high success rate for the major I am pursuing.

 

What (If Anything) Surprised You About UAFS?

The people here are absolutely amazing.  I never expected to meet so many genuinely nice and motivated people that truly want to help you and the University be the best that it can be.

 

Favorite Place on Campus?

The Lion’s Den has become my home away from home and has been the place I met some of my best friends.

 

Advice to Incoming Students?

My advice is not to be afraid, try something new, and put yourself out there.  You will meet so many more people this way and not regret your time here.

The Professors are not as scary as I thought!

Philosophy.  It was very interesting, and I left every day excited to come to the next class.

UAFS is close to my hometown, and I am familiar with the town of Ft. Smith.  It is also affordable for my liking.

How quickly I got involved here!  There are so many opportunities to get to know lots of people.

 

Favorite Place on Campus?

Starbucks.  I love coffee, and it’s a great place to study.

 

Advice to Incoming Students?

Get involved.  Find something you are interested in and try it out.  Don’t be afraid to get out of your comfort zone and try new things.

 

What Do You Wish You Would Have Known During Your First Semester?

Take each day with a new, positive outlook.  Don’t let test scores define who you are.  Be true to yourself and don’t change who you are for anyone.

 

What Has Been Your Favorite Class at UAFS?

Foundations of Early Childhood Education.  It deals with my passion for kids and gives me the opportunity to see what I do and do not want my future classroom to look like.

 

Hobbies/Interests?

Since I am on the UAFS Cross Country team, I LOVE to run!  Dancing is my favorite.  I play the flute and interact with my friends.

My favorite place to go is the amphitheater at night.  It is a really nice and peaceful spot to relax and do homework.

Get involved in organizations that interest you!  This is the best way to meet people with common interests!  I met many of my closest friends this way.

 

What Do You Wish You Would Have Known During Your First Semester?

I wish I would have known how to better manage my time.  I learned quickly hat procrastination is not a good idea in College.

 

What Has Been Your Favorite Class at UAFS?

Advanced Composition has been my favorite class at UAFS by far!!!  I’ve loved getting to read a lot of new material and compose many new types of stories.

 

Hobbies/Interests?

Reading, listening to music, food, How I Met Your Mother, hanging out with friends, playing tennis, and watching movies.

Introduction to Engineering I & II.  These classes really make me look forward to my career and remind me why I am working so hard.

The community atmosphere!  I felt welcomed everywhere I went on campus, and it was nice to build friendships with many people at UAFS.

Starbucks.  The workers are amazing and friendly every time I go.  They actually know what kind of drinks that I would like.

Make sure to get to know your professors.  They can help you understand something you did not fully comprehend in class and also provide networking opportunities for your respective fields.

Professors can be understanding.  They know life happens, and they will work with you.

Organic Chemistry II Lab.  We got to do several cool experiments that made me feel like a scientist.

UAFS seemed to be a small, yet big University.  It was far enough from home to live on campus but not so far that I could never go home.

The love and support you get from faculty, staff, and the community.  UAFS truly becomes family.

The Volleyball Court & Sand Pit.  I’ve played for years and still play at least twice per week.

I wish I would have known that this place would become my home/family sooner than I did.  I would have had more time to cherish it.

Everyone is so friendly from day one!  Anyone on campus is willing to point you in the right direction or hold open a door when you are struggling.

The Amphitheater.  It is a peaceful spot on campus when there isn’t an event there and close enough to the library if I ever need anything.

 

Advice to Incoming Students?

Time management!  College can be overwhelming but as long as you plan ahead and manage your time, you are on the right path!

 

What Do You Wish You Would Have Known During Your First Semester?

It is okay to get overwhelmed and ask for help.  I know when you’re a Freshman, you want to do everything on your own, but ask for help and guidance when you need it.

Research Methods – I got to conduct research and then present it at the Psychology Symposium.  It was really cool to learn the research side of Psychology.

The number of non-traditional students.  I felt awkward coming back to school after four years, but this fact made me feel comfortable.

Starbucks, the Campus Center Fireplace, and hopefully the new Recreation & Wellness Center in the Fall.

 

Advice to Incoming Students?

Use your time wisely and take advantage of all of the resources on campus such as tutoring, advisors, Academic Success Center, and the library.  Get to know others and step out of your comfort zone.

I wish I would have known more about financial aid and scholarship opportunities.

Behavior in the Macrosystems – This is an upper level course in my degree plan, and I enjoy it because it focuses more on what I want for a career.

I teach parenting classes once a week, attend church, and participate in church events.  I also spend the majority of my time as a mother.

The amount of things you can get involved in surprised me.  There are over 100 different organizations, so there is literally something for everyone.  I have met so many people and have made connections that will last a life time.

My favorite place on campus is probably the Campus Center.  It is the heart of campus, and it is where I spend most of my time.  People are always there, and there is always something to do.

 

Advice to Incoming Students?

Get involved!  Academics are so important, but it is also important to get involved.  Many of our organizations allow you to have amazing experiences and gain leadership skills that will last forever.

I wish I would have known how understanding and friendly everyone was.  As a Freshman, everything seems scary and intimidating, but it’s not.  Everyone is so inviting!  There’s nothing to be scared of.

My favorite class has actually been my US History II class.  The professor make it very enjoyable and made it exciting to learn.
